Research into the British Music Industry

Here is the link to the official website where I found all of the following statistics:
https://www.bpi.co.uk/home/bpi-2015-music-market-report.aspx

  • I have been researching into the British Music Industry and through this I have discovered that the top artists of the year create music for a variety of genres meaning that the pop genre doesn't dominate the music industry which is what i would have assumed prior to this research.

  • I found out that British artists dominated the charts last year due to the fact that 7 of top 10 and 15 of top 20 Official Charts Artist Albums were for British Artists and 6 of the top 10 most streamed artists in 2015 are British. This means that British artists have been able to dominate the charts and have been extremely successful over the last year.

  • Unsurprisingly, Adele’s 25 sold around  2.5 million copies in UK in addition to selling 15 million worldwide in just six weeks meaning that she became 2015’s fastest & biggest seller globally. This therefore means that it is the 11th year in a row that the best-selling artist album in UK has come from British act.

  • Additionally, around 122 million albums were purchased in their physical format as a CD, downloaded or distributed and consumed through the use of online streaming.

  • Two very well known British artists, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith both confirmed their global status though the fact that both 'X' and 'In the lonely hour' achieved the lifetime sales of over 2 million copies in the UK as well as the US. In addition to this the most streamed artist in the UK during 2015 was Ed Sheeran.

  • I found it particularly interesting that audio streaming had increased by over 80% in the last year and the fact that only around 50% of all UK music consumption is through digital formats as I did not expect these statistics.

  • I found this article quite fascinating and also very intriguing as some of the statistics were not what I was expecting which proves how our understanding and knowledge of the music industry is limited and how there is always a new song or a new artist/band that are coming into the charts.

You have produced excellent, detailed and fully reflective blogging over the last week. You have identified your groups songs and blogged well using lyric video etc. For each post you have excellent detail and justification for your group ideas. You have completed a variety research onto similar artists and their associated star image and products. You have addressed the prep tasks well from introducing what you are expected to complete for your Advance portfolio.

You have also completed detailed research into expected primary audience and attempt to apply audience profiles – this will help you understand the need for a consumer/ market for the product of the image that is to be promoted. Which record company would you sign up to? You could also add more examples of real media links to Soundcloud, Facebook pages & stay creative with your blogging.
